How do you start off the line properly with an auto?

Just keep it in Drive, brake and raise the rpms to 1k-2K, then release the brakes and ease into the throttle(depending on your power/traction)

Also depends on your Stall/Torque converter. I had an FTO with a 3,500 rpm stall converter in it, it was a bitach to drive normally as a daily driver but used to munch when "stalled" up
