Well, if I wanted to modify that car, and had several thousand to spend and plenty of time, I would buy an older WRX motor, tranny, ecu and whatever other parts would be required and swap the whole thing in. It has been done a few times in the US, although I don't know anyone personally who has done it. I think www.clubwrx.net or something like that would be a very good place to look for information and advice regarding this. Good luck though, I'm a big fan of Subaru and the way they approach things. Josh

Best thing to do considering you are in US, would be to get the engine and tranny out of a Subaru Forester GT (2.5 l Turbo mill). Because the US has lower octaine rated fuel to either Australia and Japan, the 2.5 l engine would be my bet, or possible get a front cut of a 22B STI if you can find one out of japan
