Acura RSX   Posted Thu Sep 25, 03   8:07 PM

Okay, My Mom has a RSX and I drove into work today, what is this thing? GSR,LS, B18, VTEC? Trying to get familiar with the rice codes so I can figure out what the hell you guys are saying sometimes.

Is it the base model or the Type S? If it's an auto then it's a base. The S only comes with a 6 speed. The motors are both 2.0 DOHC i-VTEC aluminum fours. Both use the new K series engine. The base makes 160 hp and revs till about 6800. The S makes 200 hp and revs till 8000 rpm.

It is the base with the automatic, but it has a manual shift feature similiar to BMW's steptronic. The power on it is very lame, it has a 6,800 redline but it took me two phone calls and a big gulp to get it there. The power just fades after about 3,500 RPM and then it just moves the needle up higher. Is this thing even a VTEC type motor? Iv'e heard that you can feel those when it kicks in, not on this though.

Yeah, sadly the motor in the base RSX's and new Si hatch are pretty lame. The numbers suggest something better, but the performance isn't there. I think the Si ran like a 16 flat stock, kind of sad when the last Si ran solid 15's with less torque. Yes it's VTEC, but the new i-VTEC seems to blend it in a little better so it doesn't feel quite like a punch that the older B series mills had.

Take an RSX Type-S for a spin, completely different car. I drove a new Si and the Type-S, talk about night and day. The Type-S runs high 14’s stock, so it isn’t too shabby.

Yup. New Si is beans. I guess they could go all right, but the first thing I’d do is swap in an RSX Type-S mill...

Yeah, but I still think you should swap for a B series. Hell, get a non-VTEC B18B Integra motor and then turbo it. That would be cheaper than a DOHC VTEC mill and would make some sweet power with a turbo.
